When the original Airdrieonians collapsed in 2002 due to financial difficulties, Airdrie United were founded as a reincarnation of the old club. After their application to join the Scottish League was rejected in favour of Gretna, the new club bought over struggling Second Division side Clydebank, relocated to Airdrie's Excelsior Stadium, and changed the name and the strip. County's first competitive match with the new club was a 1st Division League match in 2004.
