Match Report

Source unknown.

ROSS COUNTY recorded their first victory over Champions Celtic in the SPL at the Global Energy Stadium, in dramatic style. The victory saw the Staggies extend their unbeaten to eleven matches, but their latest success was bitter sweet for the home support.

The visitors opened on the offensive, and forged a two goal advantage after just twenty minutes. County keeper Michael Fraser will want to forget both in a hurry. The first came direct from a corner in 15 minutes, Charlie Mulgrew’s inswinger deceiving everyone including the County keeper, whose flailing touch wasn’t enough to keep it out. Six minutes later he was clutching thin air again, this time Gary Hooper using Dylan McGeouch’s cut-back at the angle of the box to flight a finish in at the back post.

But this County side is built on the confidence their unbeaten run had given them, and after 29 minutes reduced the leeway with a goal of real quality. Grant Munro latched onto a headed clearance from Rami Gershon at the edge of the box, and the stopper smashed home a superb volley from 20 yards. Seven minutes later Victoria Park erupted as their heroes levelled the match in sensational fashion.. Dylan McGeouch looked like he should have cleared Iain Vigurs’ cross at the far post but Sam Morrow had other ideas, and swept home the equaliser past the helpless Fraser Forster to restore parity.

The second period saw the home side hold the upper-hand, and were looking the more likely to add another, but almost came unstuck midway through the half when Fraser parried a Hooper shot which cannoned off Mihael Kovacevic’s chest on to the woodwork and safety. Efe Ambrose looked increasingly anxious, minutes later he headed a Rocco Quinn through ball back to Forster, only to see Martin Scott steal in behind him. He was lucky the midfield man failed to make a clean contact with the goal gaping. Wohlfarth came on and almost made an instant impact, when hechased down a ball over the top but fired his finish effort wide of the target Foster caught of his line.

The keeper was a long way short when in injury-time another ball over the top from Evangelos Oikonomou, saw the German striker chasing it down, with Forster and Kelvin Wilson closing in, powered a superb header over the duo and into the net for a dramatic winner for the home side.
