Steven Saunders began his career as a youngster with Queens Park.. Subsequently signed for Motherwell in 2008. The player made his debut as a substitute in a Scottish Premier League match against Aberdeen on 29 November 2008. Saunders then started the following two games against Kilmarnock and Hamilton Academical, playing at right back, and was highly praised from his manager following those early performances.

In the 200910 season, and under new manager Jim Gannon, Saunders began to established himself as a regular in the Fir Park side, in his preferred position of centre back. He scored his first goal for the club on Saturday 24 April 2010 against Hearts. Under team boss Craig Brown, Saunders became a regular in the Motherwell side at right back.

On 15 November 2010, Saunders was called up to the Scotland Squad for the first time, and made his debut the evening after in a 30 win over the Faroe Islands.

On 10 August 2011, whilst playing for the Scotland under-21s, Steven suffered an achilles tendon injury that ruled him out for most of the 201112 season. It was some eight months later before the player would return to first team duty, and on 8 April 2012, Saunders made his first-team comeback as a late substitute in a 11 draw against Hibernian.

The player was released by Motherwell at the end of the 201213 season, following another lengthy injury lay-off that was to restrict him to just one further appearance. On 8 July 2013, Steven Saunders moved North and signed a 1 year deal initially with Ross County.
