Martin Woods began his career at the Leeds United academy, where he was capped by Scotland Youth. He made one substitute appearance for the Leeds first team before a loan spell at Hartlepool United F.C. After Leeds were relegated from the Premier League they offered the out of contract Woods a new contract but he turned it down joining Premier League Sunderland.

His next move took him to Sunderland where he made seven appearances in the Premier League and eight in all. He scored in his debut pre-season however, was released at the end of the 200506 season.

On 1 August 2006 he signed for Rotherham United for the start of the League One season. Woods was a regular in the first team for Millers.

Despite his relatively short time at Rotherham United, Woods became something of a cult figure with Millers fans due to his consistent outstanding displays, he was named player of the season.

On 5 June 2007, Woods was transferred to Doncaster Rovers.On 14 February 2008, Woods joined League One side Yeovil Town on a one-month loan deal. Woods returned to Doncaster Rovers after his one-month loan spell and became an important player for the club. During the 201213 season he helped the club gain promotion as Champions of League One.

Woods has been capped by Scotland at School boy, Under 17, Under 19 and Under 21 level.

Woods signed for Barnsley at the end of the January 2014 transfer window. He left the club at the end of the 201314 season. Made eight appearances for the club.

Woods signed for Ross County on 9th October 2014. Made his competitive debut for the club, when he came on as a second half substitute in the SPFL encounter against St Mirren in Paisley on Saturday 25th October 2014, in a match that ended in a 2-2 draw.
